Inspired by Memories Growing up in an Asian American household in San Francisco
The Scent Library was born out of the need to find clean, luxurious, and beautiful-looking candles that are affordable, yet socially conscious. After buying a collection of bougie, department-store candles that were heavily concentrated with perfumery, I realized I was subconsciously buying items with a “name brand” to fit in, even if they did not match up to my lifestyle nor taste. I started thinking of ways to create my own blend of scents that reflected who I truly was and what I wanted, without compromising my health or the environment. While deep in research, I discovered that many of the store-bought candles that were mass-produced or sold to expensive department stores were created using paraffin wax, which is made from petroleum as a by-product of making gasoline. When burned, the paraffin wax can potentially release dangerous chemicals. After educating myself about the truth behind these candles, I immediately looked for better alternatives to create my own collection that also reflected memories stemming from childhood growing up in an Asian American household. During lockdown in 2020, I had a lot of alone time to dive deep into my experiments. After several misses, I finally found the perfect formula/recipe to create what is now The Scent Library.
